UPS Charges for Free Ship Label

Feb14
2011

This was one of my worst ever consumer moments. I canceled my account with CLEAR Internet b/c it turned out they did not have 4G coverage on my street. Clear was okay with telling me at time of purchase that my address was covered, but later clarified I was “on the border.” The lady on the phone actually said “Do you know where Clement Park is? You could go there to get 4G…” I had seen enough to realize I was dealing with a Mickey Mouse operation. Fortunately I was within the 2-week hassle free cancellation, so I ended things and obtained a Free UPS Shipping Label.

Today, I went to the UPS Store to ship the device. Here’s where I learned that even stalwart companies like UPS can screw you over. Indeed, the firmly established monopoly is even more likely… I told the clerk I had a ship label and showed him it on my IPOD, and asked him what I should do with it. He said I could print it there, at the cost of THREE DOLLARS. I was totally blind sighted by this. I thought I could email it to the store’s machine, or direct print it…

I decided to bite the bullet just to get this CLEAR chapter checked off my list. But then I learned an even sadder reality: UPS charges for boxes, too. Again, I was comparing it to an inappropriate example, in this case USPS which provides boxes for Priority / etc shipping.

My lessons: call ahead and find out the rules. Buy a printer. Stop depending on some notion that companies are reasonable and want a win-win. Any company that charges $3 per print, esp. for a ship label, is NOT interested in you winning anything. Such a company just wants your money, any way it can get it.

So now I will go on Amazon and buy a printer, using my Prime Membership FREE shipping with UPS…I think the UPS Delivery Team is different than ‘Retail’ aka UPS Store. Retail usually means ‘the customer is stupid / or scared / or in need ‘ .. what can we get out of him? How much is she willing to spend? ‘

The majority of Brick & Mortars are operating like convenience stores; whereas the actual grandfather of convenience stores, 7-11,offers many fine values.Try getting 2 donuts at UPS for less than ten bucks!

Happy Chinese New Year

The snow in Chicago became ripe for throwing yesterday. I had a spirited battle in Chinatown Square. This is the year of the Rabbit. So be it!

Lending a Vacuum Cleaner and a Million Dollar Idea

Aug29
2010

Some of you may know I built a Personal Inventory Manager program (Wazitat) in 2007-8 and then got bogged down trying to make it a way to share goods among friends and neighbors (the philosophical issues bogged me down) .  Now there are numerous companies that provide a platform for sharing items or excess capacity (such as a room). It’s a sound model. This article in today’s New York Times offers a helpful glimpse into the real life world of people who use services such as AirBnB and SnapGoods. The principle underlying these services is “access trumps ownership.” I’ve been a believer in that since “Wired” turned me on to the powers of a network economy. Funny enough, one of my first blog posts (before they were called blogs) was about the diminished importance of ownership versus access. The crux was: “With ownership comes responsibility (taxes, insurance..); with access, opportunity.”

Although I bowed out of developing Wazitat so that I can focus on music and comedy, I remain an advocate and user of peer-sharing… and I may re-start development of some of Wazitat’s functions.

Keepin’ the Spirit Alive

My true nature is that of a champion. I have joined a gym that trains athletes. It is a Cross Fit gym, which features high-intensity exercises at fast-pace. Some nights I row; some nights I box. I’m working hard to get back on top.

Musical Chairy

Jul14
2010

I’m in my new music room. The chair was my first furniture for the pad. I’m holding Alicia in my left-hand. Denise looks on from the wall, she a Gibson hollow-body knockoff. The music box was my very first purchase for the place, as I waited for the keys in a pawn shop… I found a cherry-wood phonograph player (with radio and a CD player on the side). Since then, I’ve been buying vinyl from Reckless Records. Some of the album covers wind up on the wall.

I’ve lost some time to a cold (which I’d avoided all winter / spring but came down with last week). Now I’m well and eager to resume work on the comedy record. The jokes are in the can, but I have to add music.
