Built to Spill

Free music continues to fall upon New York this summer, enriching the lives of people throughout the several boroughs. In the past week I was fortunate enough to catch the NY Philharmonic’s Central Park performance of some Mozart and Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. Friday I ushered a visiting sister down to South Street Seaport to see Superchunk, part of a River to River series of free concerts. Although the North Carolina-based band dispassionately played a string of repetitive power-chord songs, it was good energy. Yesterday’s annual Siren Music Festival in Coney Island was a blast, blast, blast.

I’m so glad I headed on down in time for the final act. Brandishing my reporter’s notebook and pen I told the first security guy I saw that I needed to get into the front section because I write for a blog. He chuckled and told me to tell his boss what I told him, and I repeated it. He looked me in the eye, realized I was telling the truth and yet full of b.s., and he let me through. So, to affirm the honesty of my request, I will recall what I can of the set.

Photos I snagged from the Flickr user phq200.

Season Finale at Hollywood Bowl

I was able to see Brian Wilson close out the Walt Disney summer season at the Hollywood Bowl Sunday night. I caught the orchestra, LA Philharmonic perform a Gershwin piece and then stay on for a couple tunes with Wilson’s band. It was a fun time for me, my cousin, and pal Jim. Jim’s from St.Louis and digs Chuck Berry, so he was happy to hear Johnny B. Goode and the Berry influenced/lifted Beach Boy songs. Wilson was smart to use that Berry guitar sound back in the 60s, and he’s smart now to have a firecracker band just like other old-timers like Bob Dylan. A great time was had by all.

During “Do you Want to Dance?” the orchestra’s conductor came out on stage (among others) and was dancing around like a crazy man. Wilson presided over this circus as the goofy wisecracking uncle/grandfather type he’s become. He is far from comatose. Whatever he’s on nowadays, it’s working. While he’s still reanimated, I recommend checking out his show: heavy on the hits, but featuring a few songs from his new record, including a down-tempo encore/closer “Southern California,” which followed the fireworks-backed string of “Fun, Fun, Fun” and “Surfing USA” and “Barbara Ann.”

San Francisco Outside Lands Festival

The 3 day festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park was a wonderful trip.

I was able to rock out to some of my favorite music acts. Some highlights:

Radiohead – awesome. Thom Yorke re-invented as Kurt Cobain-sweater-wearing, bearded mellow rock star.
(see video clip)

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – amazing. special guest Steve Winwood joining the band for “Give Me Some Lovin”; Petty stamping his own version of “G-L-O-R-I-A.”

Wilco – at home and at ease. Extended jam for “Impossible Germany” from newest album; “California Stars” from the Mermaid Avenue / Woody Guthrie project.
Jack Johnson – I was a bit put-off that he got the top spot, but it wound up being a very fine way to end the festival. He had a few special moments coinciding with a light show that you just had to be there to appreciate.

Glad that I was!
